Trichotillomania & Wigs

At our wigs shop in Ballymount we see customers with many different hair loss conditions. One of which is Trichotillomania that is generally referred to as hair pulling disorder and leads to a persistent and uncontrollable impulse to take out one's own hair or eyelashes. The is categorized as an obsessive-compulsive disorder and  may lead to hair loss and be accompanied by emotions of tension or worry prior to pulling, followed by feelings of relaxation or satisfaction.

Different types of trichotillomania include pulling hair from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other parts of the body. Many of our clients that have had hair loss due to Tricho require a wig of hair topper. Also Tricho can range in severity from minor to severe and be generally performed using the fingers or tweezers. As a result, some woman may experience significant distress and impairment in their everyday functioning. Trichotillomania is frequently a chronic condition that can significantly affect a person's emotional health, sense of self, and social connections.

Although the precise causation of trichotillomania is unknown, it is thought to be a result of a confluence of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Behavioral therapies including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), habit reversal training (HRT), and medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are frequently used in the treatment of trichotillomania. Self-help techniques and supportive therapy may also be helpful in controlling the disease. We see woman for all mages with this condition, especially teenagers and we always advise to get professional assistance from a doctor or health care specialist.
